The year was 1909, the first alleged observance of Women's Day, called "National Women's Day", was held on February 28, 1909, in New York City, organized by the Socialist Party of America at the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel.

This was one of the first struggles for women's rights - the famous suffragette movement, which started in 1897 with the foundation of the National Union for Female Suffrage by British educator Millicent Fawcett. However, in the United Kingdom, female voting was allowed from 1918.
